What is Lion's Mane?
The Lion’s Mane mushroom, or lion’s mane mushroom (Hericiumerinaceus, Yamabushitake), has been part of Asian culture and Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years due to its valuable properties. Resembling a lion’s mane or icicles, the mushroom was reserved for members of the royal family in ancient China. Due to its effect on concentration during meditation, it has also been valued by Buddhist monks for centuries. Lion’s Mane belongs to the group of adaptogens – compounds of natural origin that increase the body’s adaptive abilities in response to unfavorable environmental conditions. They facilitate adaptation to increased exposure of the body to stress factors, both physical and emotional. It is worth noting that adaptogenic mushrooms do not exhibit psychoactive properties and do not affect perception in any way!
Why is it worth choosing the Olimp Lion’s Mane Mushroom dietary supplement?
The pharmaceutical company, Olimp Laboratories, when providing a valuable product, uses an ingredient with a specific amount of active substance, i.e. a standardized extract. In the case of the Lion’s Mane Mushroom dietary supplement by Olimp Sport Nutrition, these are beta-glucans. These are structural components of plant cell walls (mainly cereals – oats and barley), yeast, and adaptogenic fungi. From a chemical point of view, these are long-chain glucose polymers, in which individual molecules are connected in a linear or branched manner by ß-type glycosidic bonds. The form of beta-glucans with the broadest spectrum of health-promoting effects seems to be beta-glucans obtained from mushrooms, which are known to stimulate the immune system and exhibit antioxidant properties associated with the ability to quench free radicals. The structural and physical properties of beta-glucans vary depending on the mushroom species, varieties, as well as the cultivation environment, drying conditions and methods of isolation/extraction of beta-glucans, which consequently leads to significant changes in the intensity and type of activity10. Standardization to at least 25% beta-1,3/1,6-D-glucans in the Olimp Lion’s Mane Mushroom dietary supplement guarantees a constant and repeatable content of the active ingredient in each production batch. This means that each capsule of the product contains at least 125 mg of beta-1,3/1,6-D-glucans!
Why a fruiting body and not a mycelium?
The body of the mushroom is formed by the mycelium, usually hidden in the substrate. What we commonly call a mushroom is only its compact part, the fruiting body. During the cultivation of adaptogenic mushrooms, the mycelium grows on a starch medium. The fruiting body develops in a long-term process only after the mycelium has colonized the entire medium. Undeniably, the mycelium contains a number of active compounds, but it is difficult to separate it from the medium in which it grew. For this reason, a significant part of preparations based on mycelium may be worthless starch, which is a polysaccharide.
Polysaccharides or beta-glucans?
Active beta-glucans derived from fungi, like starch (α-glucan), belong to the group of polysaccharides. Nevertheless, standardization for polysaccharides is not an indicator of the quality of the Lion’s Mane extract, because they can almost entirely come from the above-mentioned, worthless starch. Therefore, the key is to choose a product containing an extract standardized for beta-1,3/1,6-D-glucans.
10:1 extract ratio
Ratio (DER) is the ratio of the amount of raw material subjected to extraction to the amount of extract obtained. This way we learn how much raw material was used to produce one part of the extract. In the case of the Olimp Lion’s Mane Mushroom dietary supplement, the RATIO is 10:1. This means that 1 kg of extract was obtained from 10 kg of dried Lion’s Mane mushroom fruit bodies! One capsule containing 500 mg of this extract therefore corresponds to 5 g of dried Lion’s Mane fruit bodies.
