Vitamin C, otherwise called ascorbic acid, is a vitamin that is essential to the body system. Naturally, it exists in fruits and vegetables such as cantaloupe, citrus fruits, broccoli, kiwi, and bell peppers. Alternatively, it can be taken as vitamin C supplements.
Vitamin C is important for the development of the human body and, in particular, aids the immune system in fighting diseases. Among its numerous uses is preventing vitamin C deficiency, which in extreme situations can cause anemia and scurvy, a disease that leads to bleeding gums and even tooth loss. Vitamin C is not produced by the human organism and therefore must be supplied from external sources such as food and supplements.
--part--Vitamin C Supplements
Vitamins sourced from food through a healthy diet can only provide a limited amount of the essential nutrients required by the body. Often, there is a need for a larger dose of vitamin C in the body, especially for people struggling with health issues and prone to deficiencies. Supplementing vitamin C can provide the necessary amount of vitamins to battle diseases without increasing food consumption.
Benefits of Vitamin C Supplements
Vitamin C benefits the body in many ways, including:
- Strengthening the Immune System: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps eliminate free radicals harmful to the body. It decreases the vulnerability to chronic diseases by boosting the immune system.
- Healthy Skin: The skin requires vitamin C to produce collagen and accelerate the healing of injuries. Your skin will look better, younger, and have fewer wrinkles if the recommended amount of this essential vitamin is regularly consumed.
- Improved Cardiovascular Health: It reduces the risk of some cardiovascular diseases, including high blood pressure and hypertension.
- Allergies: For seasonal and environmental allergies, it has been proven that vitamin C reduces many of the common symptoms that may come with it.
What are Vitamin C Tablets?
While people usually consume a certain amount of vitamin C in their diets, supplementing with vitamin C tablets can provide a larger dose of the vitamin with extra benefits. Taking the recommended dosage of vitamin C supplements can boost the immune system and can be very helpful for those who struggle with certain health conditions.
They also help in the healthy formation and maintenance of bones, ensure good skin condition and relax blood vessels to improve blood flow in the body.
How Often can Vitamin C be Used?
Due to its characteristics, Vitamin C should be supplied to the organism every day, especially at times when the body is exposed to various pathogens or oxidative stress (e.g. during strength training).
Everyone is different and has a different lifestyle (diet, illness, injury, stress etc.), and therefore, the need for vitamin C is different for each person and should be determined individually. Vitamin C supplementation can also be based on the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). However, it should be remembered that the values presented below help in preventing scurvy, which is an extreme consequence of vitamin C deficiency. According to the RDA, on average, the daily intake of vitamin C for different groups is:
- Between 15 mg to 25 mg for children.
- 45 mg for adolescents aged between 9 and 13 years.
- 65 mg to 75 mg for teenagers between 14 and 18 years of age.
- 75 mg for adult females older than 18 years old, 85 mg for pregnant women, and 120 mg for breastfeeding mothers.
- 90 mg for adult males older than 18.
Is Vitamin C Effective Against Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
Although there are no certain clinical data or controlled trials that conclude that vitamin C is effective in the treatment of COVID-19, there are many speculations that it can reduce the symptoms experienced by patients.
Generally, it is known that vitamin C effectively builds immunity against external invaders of the body, including viruses.
